Our History

The Mawego National Polytechnic is located on the pinnacle of a hill in Rachuonyo North Sub County in Homa-Bay County, the institution enjoys a serene environment and a cinematic view of Lake Victoria which is barely 7 Kilometers downhill. It is accessible from Oyugis via Sikri, Bongu, Ringa, Kadongo, Rakwaro, or Kendu Bay.

The Mawego National Polytechnic started as a trade school in 1952 established by the Utretch Brothers of the Netherlands. It offered trades such as artisan masonry, leather work, tailoring and carpentry. It also had a primary school section. In 1967, the institution was taken over by the government and became a national Technical Secondary school under the Ministry of Education. It excelled particularly in building trades which it offered to trainees from all over the country. In 1986, it was upgraded to a Technical Training Institute. On 18th January, 2024 responding to section 26 (2) of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Act No. 29 of 2013, the Cabinet Secretary for Education Science and Technology involved the Mawego National Polytechnic Legal Order 2024, and established “The Mawego National Polytechnic” that recognized it as a polytechnic. This order obligated the institution to constitute a Governing Council.

The institution is managed by a Governing Council appointed in accordance to the TVET Act 2013 of the laws of Kenya. The current staff of the institution comprises of 211 trainers and 73 non-teaching staff members. As an ISO 9001:2015 Certified institution, the staff are highly skilled and committed to providing quality training to produce competent graduates for the Industry. The Mawego National Polytechnic is committed to delivery of quality training in Technical, Applied sciences, Engineering and business fields spanning from artisan (Level 4), certificate (Level 5), diploma ( Level 6) and higher Diploma levels. It encourages initiatives in scientific innovation and strives towards expanding the frontiers of technology so as to improve the social economic status of the people of Kenya. .
